First of all…WOW…Thanks for all of the messages last week. You, as readers, may find it amazing how many people are touched by depression both in their families and personally. I hope sharing helped you all to KNOW that you are not alone and there is help!
I am allowing myself one "escape" per day. Saturday, we went to the new movie ARGO. It was great…a solid 4 stars. The most amazing part of the story is the fact that it is a true. I was in high school during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, and I remember thinking about how L O N G those people were held. The movie is about the secret mission to get the 6 embassy employees out of the Canadian ambassador's residence before they were all killed. Ben Affleck directed and starred and his character was believable. If you saw the advertisements, you may be expecting high action, and hero- style shenanigans which is not the case. The movie is more about the art of "self control" and keeping your cool in the midst of extreme stress. We all really enjoyed it and it was also a good history lesson as well.
A Red Box rental was Rock of Ages. This may have been the worst movie of all time, except the music was fun. Amazingly enough, Dave sat through the whole thing and we mostly just laughed and shook our heads. I must say, I am not doing a lot of head shaking but you know what I mean! When Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand went in for a kiss while singing the REO Speedwagon 80's hit "I can't fight this feeling anymore" I wasn't sure the corny factor could get any worse! Julianne Hough has a good country voice but in the movie it sounded like some of her high notes were sung by Little Bo Peep. The main character, Stacy Jaxx (aka Tom Cruise) was actually kind of hilarious although "YUCK" was usually the word out of my mouth! It IS a musical, so get ready for some 80's best hits from start to finish. A gentle reminder to parents…this is NOT a kid's movie. Rent at your own risk!
As you may have guessed, I have read a book or 2. Here are a couple of quick reviews:
One Thousand Gifts: **** If you need some encouragement, this is a great book. The author uses some flowery language at times, but definitely worth the read!
WILD**This book is an OPRAH recommendation. Coffee Talk Mom says, "Save your money"! What I thought would be a huge adventure book through the Pacific Crest Trail, was more of a snooze fest. More importantly, I couldn't relate to the character, a real-life, "my life was so hard" woman who slept with strangers and dropped acid. I don't know…maybe just not for me?
To Heaven and Back**** This book was featured on the new "Katie" show and, a few days after watching the program, one of my good friends sent it to me in a care package. I really enjoyed reading the author's experience as an orthopedic surgeon who found herself in heaven after being under water for 15 minutes in a kayak accident. The way she has continued to share her faith with patients is commendable. More importantly, it was not her only loss and she has used this to survive the year's since.
Back to the recliner!
