How does it feel to know that, if you have children in Colorado, they are currently being used as the "crash test dummies" for the marijuana laws in our state? I realize that I am most likely preaching to the choir, but living in Boulder has really brought me to the edge of all things POT. I have lived here a year and have yet to smell pot, but this I know: there are HUGE problems in the middle schools and high schools. What the government and voters really didn't think through was that where there is marijuana, there is a way to alter it (legally?) and make it more potent. Your kids, OUR kids, are a part of a big experiment. WAX is the new drug of choice for the kids in Boulder. Instead of the average 10% THC, one hit has 80% TCH, rendering these kids completely out of their minds, and, guess what? They are getting in their cars and driving around with this in their systems. How can we possibly expect a pot-laced brownie to be cut in 10ths? Yep, 1/10 brownie is the recommended dose. Whoever thought this was "cool" or "no big deal" or "isn't addictive" is nuts.
Let me explain. As part of my week, I meet with some ladies to lunch and have bible study. We rarely get to the study. We end up praying for our kids. Many of these great moms have to go in to Walgreens weekly for drug testing kits for their teens. They NEVER thought in a million years they would be doing this for THEIR own kids! It's kind of like the moms walk of shame to the counter. They are doing what they have to do to keep their kids safe. Did you know that in the 80's, the average hit was 4% THC…now it is 15%. The potency has gone up and what do you know…now we have long term studies indicating that this drug affects brain development and, when heavily used as a teen, the effects on memory and thinking skills can be irreversible. On the average 8 IQ points were lost and not recovered, even when the patients quit. This drug is trouble and I am scared for the future of our state. Personally, this year, our Keystone ski condo was not rented as much. The feedback from realtors was that many families are finding other locations to ski, knowing that the access to marijuana is right on their doorstep and they are potentially bringing their kids to ski next to a dispensary. Who would be excited to move their families to Colorado, knowing that the access to drugs, at the high schools especially, is basically "legal". Police departments are not sending out special units to bust someone for having over their legal limit of weed. This is where we will see the results of this law: in the ER and the morgue. Give it a couple of years…potentially while your own children are "in the system". There will be all kinds of "new studies". Trust me…this is an accident waiting to happen and your kids are the crash test dummies.
