Is there something wrong with this picture?
Well, I like to pride myself on the quintessential "picked up"..ok...faked...house. My sister came to visit this summer and shared with me a "best-seller" book about how your life will change if you can tidy up! At first I thought she was nuts! Dump everything on the bed and "feel it"...if you don't find joy in, say "thank you for your service" and add it to the Goodwill pile. Ya...right... She left the book with me on a "borrow" and I must say, that the information slowly crept to mind every day. Marie Kondo has written a short-easy read book called, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up". Like or not, I am on an unexpected journey...
I started with something simple...dump the bra and undies drawer onto the bed. Well ladies, this in and of itself is a gut-check. The question had to become, "Does this give CTDad joy"...OMG...How embarrassing to look at the "favorite underwear" only to be horrified at the color it had become after going through 1000 loads of laundry over a 10 year period. Admit it...you have a favorite bra that is a complete fashion and marriage breaker. I even found a "santa" bra and ? set. Unfortunately for CTD, that thing had not seen the light of day for about 8 years. Did I buy it on a dare...was that a serious purchase? Fast forward to donating my "colorful" bras (red, turquoise, brown, purple) and random underwear that included, but is not limited to, g-strings (purchased on my 40th with my high school girlfriends in Vegas)..., faded favorites and the like.
Without going in to sordid details, the bathing suit drawer was next (a 2 piece...really?), ill-fitting one piece numbers with gold accents...UGH! I must admit, I kept all of the cover-ups...I mean, who doesn't like a good cover-up?
Ok...this is overwhelming! I have finished shoes (don't ask...see photo) and convinced CTD to clean his closet...so yesterday we hammered thru old ties (80's were good suit years), sweatshirts from the 90's, I'll-fitting pants, brand new clothing that hadn't been touched, and after about 4 hours we were both exhausted. I lay in waste in a pile of geometric ties, orange crocs, and the like. This morning he said to me, " I can see the closet floor and I LOVE seeing all of my shirts lined up."... Hey...maybe this works!
I can only say that I have "started the process" and I have miles to go. Maybe it will straighten out more of my life than just the closets. I feel a sense of contentment when I am organized...who knows...maybe you could find some lost treasures as well!
