Yep...we moved and I don’t recommend it. Its an exhausting process and it’s something like having a baby: after a couple of years you forget how bad it hurts, and you do it all over again.
I try to learn things from life experiences both good and bad and, in the process, share some insight with you. These can apply to you whether you are moving or not! So...what makes a house beautiful?
Clean/Organized Spaces: One of the GREAT things about moving is the chance at a fresh start. Take the time to go through your closets. Don’t get overwhelmed at the thought of your whole house right away. Start small and think about what you hold on to that you really never wear or don’t need. Better yet, think about this: if I had to pay cash for someone to MOVE this, would I still want it? Im not totally all about getting rid of everything that doesn’t bring “JOY”...thanks Marie Kwondo...I mean...sweaters don’t give me a ton of “joy” but if I got rid of them, I would miss them next fall. I have been known to very self-righteously get rid of a bunch of stuff, only to have to re-buy the kitchen gadget, strap-less bra,and western snap-front shirt. Im not exactly sure who wants all of the photos I have amassed, but all it takes is for me to open one of those precious books, and I am back in time and swept away. I dont get rid of photos, but I have ditched the “doubles”. I clearly remember playing the photo “Russian Roulette” of “should I get doubles and pray that these pictures turned out?? I digress...back to the house...
Green (life): I’ve always loved the color green...there are so many shades, and I consider it a neutral. I like having a plant or two scattered around the house. If you can’t keep one alive, try getting a basil for $3.99 at Trader Joe’s for your kitchen. IKEA even has some good fakes and pots. If they are small, get 3 of them! Spruce up a book shelf and bring some life to your space. Regardless of your style, green is the great equalizer. It can be modern or traditional!
Pick a theme (or not): its great to have well-made pieces of furniture in your home, but the last thing I want is to be stuck with the same look for 50 years. It’s great to have a look that is “you”, but splurge on new pillows, and change up accessories every once in awhile. Still have burgundy in your house ? switch it out for a new color. Stuck in the past? Add some metal and wood touches that combine the styles.
You be YOU! : Although she is amazing, not everyone is Joanna Gaines and not every house should look like a farmhouse. What speaks to you? Take something special like a piece of art you love, and build a new room around that. If you have a friend whose style you love, ask them to help, then take the advice they give to pair down the 80’s collectibles . Once they are out of sight, you may not even miss them! Even if you don’t have a budget for changes, you can probably afford a quart of paint for your old dresser or cabinet. I got free chairs off the Nextdoor app, sanded and painted them and reupholstered the seats with fabric ($10) and we use them every day in the kitchen .
Light: There is a room in our new house with no lights...I’ve been in it about twice...in a month. Our master has a super cool chandelier and I find myself drawn into that room. It doesn’t take much money to have some new lights (sure...you can spend thousands) if you shop at Target or Homegoods. I got an awesome gold light for the study with an Edison bulb and it was under $80 (bulb included).
Enough already...get out there and enjoy your beautiful home...one chair, light, or plant at a time!
