It all started out with good intentions...we are in Utah for the Patriot Boot Camp weekend that we have volunteered at for years. We decided to drive and got to see our peeps in Steamboat for breakfast, great weather the whole drive, and other than a sore back...all was good. When we got to the Hyatt, there was a sign that said, “Guest of the day...David D.”...we chuckled as they handed us an “extra” water for our room as well as a candy bar. I mean...we have MADE it, if you know what I mean! You KNOW people who KNOW people...and yes, we are definitely THOSE people. Of course, I am kidding...
Having sat for 9 hours, the first thing I think about is, “Let’s go for a walk”. This particular hotel is adjoining an outlet mall, so off we went to stretch the legs. At first, it felt pretty good...we had been in our air conditioned room for a few minutes and I wasn’t worried about the heat. THEN...I realized it was 95 degrees and I was exhausted...the next phase is “crabby”, followed by, “I need a glass of white wine...and let’s get back to the room”... Now, I’m no alcoholic, but at that point I was practically RUNNING back to the hotel.
I bellied up to the “bar”...and said, I would like a glass of house wine to bring up to my room. To my utter horror, he said that in Utah, you must serve (aka. Order) food to have a glass of wine. By this time, CTD was ready to provide counseling. I just said, “Okay, thanks anyway”...no problem, right? What I REALLY wanted to say was, “DON’T YOU NOW WHO I AM?... I am the “guest of the day”!! Then under my breath I said, “Welcome to Utah”! What was my problem?? Well, honestly...I was exhausted, and frustrated, and not very happy. I hope I am not the only one who goes through days like that. It really was not such a big deal, but TO ME...at THAT MOMENT...it felt like I was on “Survivor” and rather than being handed a bag of rice, I was handed a bag of dirt.
Embarrassed to say, that was NOT the end of it. I got in the car and drove CTD to a State run liquor store...11 minutes away...there are no bottles of wine in the grocery or at CostCo in Utah. This was IT! By the time we got back to the hotel, I got into the room, took a shower, and went to bed. Yep...that all important glass of wine is still unopened in our hotel fridge.
If this is you today (kids back to school but coming home with paperwork and homework?) breathe and realize that everyone has days and moments like that. I know who you are!
This morning there was a new “Guest of the Day” posted...life goes on!
